Master-ful after Ulster Cesarewitch defeat

22 Oct 2012
Action Master who managed second in the Ulster Cesarewitch at Down Royal last month, showed his quality by storming to victory at Cheltenham's Showcase meeting.

Dessie Hughes' six-year old finished behing Noel Meade's Blue Cannon in the Down Royal contest but on Friday came from way back to strike in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham's opening meeting of the season.

Richard Hughes - who rode a stunning seven-timer at Windsor on Monday- took time out from chasing the Flat jockeys title to leg Bryan Cooper up aboard his father's Action Master (20-1).

"We were sick of the heavy ground in Ireland and the horse wants good ground- he only got it once and was second, finishing fast in the Ulster Cesarewitch," said Hughes snr.

"He just has to creep and creep through the race. He could come back for the Festival, and we'll tip away until then," added Hughes, who has entered Magnanimity in the Down Royal Festival feature, the JNwine.com Champion Chase on Saturday 3rd November.

Magnanimity was second to another €140,000 JNwine.com Champion Chase contender Roi Du Mee at Punchestown last week.
